I like the mood, your voice, the melody you sing, and the overall concept— but I’m not a fan of how robotic everything feels in the soundscape. It has a dull, lifeless quality, and I don’t think that’s what you were going for. Still an interesting track; if this is your debut, I’m eager to see where you go from here! Followed :)
The side-chain gives this such a groovy feel, I like it! The funky bassline is one of the most unique things you’ve done so far, but it works very well with this song. Keep it up, dynamic0!
The vocals are really raw, but I think that definitely can give it a better emotional weight! The production is really nice as well, I love that over saturated piano arpeggio at the beginning of each section, it has a nice slap-in-the-face effect. Really solid work, I hope you progress to the next round!
Thank GOD you’re not in my NGUAC group!! This is too cool!!
The unique time signature gives the song a really interesting flow; this ragtime piece packs a lot of flavor into that sub-2 minute runtime! You’ve written a lovely composition with a lot of character here… the whole piece just feels so animated, full of life! Absolutely did lift my mood.
Great song, I think you’ll have no trouble making it to the next round… hopefully, we both will!
EDIT: oh shoot we ARE in the same group, my bad. Also, your method sounds really interesting— I have no idea how you can put so many takes in, and still have such a seamless piece. Incredible! See you on the next round!
I think we both have similar odds to make it to the finals, with the beautiful song you made, even if we actually are in the same group ;) ( I passed the 90 fans just in time before NGUAC starts ^^ )
I'm glad this piece managed to lift up your mood, it had this effect composing it as well! A kind of remedy against all the darkness going in the world right now... Won't start on that or I'll write a book!
This rag is short and packed you're right! Each section required a lot of practice before being able to record takes that are worthy of being put in the final project, often hours of piano playing just for a couple seconds of content. It's rewarding in the end to see all the efforts finally shaping into a final and coherent form :D
Thank you very much for the kind words! Maybe we'll meet up in the next round!
Compositionally, this is quite an interesting piece. I definitely think you’ve got the musicality to create some really sick songs, but I don’t think you know how to consistently get the pieces to fall into place. But don’t worry, with the consistent amount of practice you’re putting in, that can and will come with time!! I think you also oughta try having a project you work on for multiple weeks or so, give it as much time as you need to get to as high a level of quality as you can. Prove to yourself how far you can go! Because I think you can go make music more beautiful than ANYONE expects, especially yourself— but beauty takes more time than 3 and a half hours :)
Also, @SkankyMojo, what would it take to get a review from you, yours is so thorough what
My GOD you’ve cooked with this one, I was hooked as soon as I hit play and that HUGE bass came in. In fact, everything about this song is huge! A wall of sound that just washes over you in the coolest way possible. Absolutely incredible dubstep!
But the highlight for me is actually the break, I cannot get enough of that drum pattern!! It flows beautifully throughout the entire section, and mixed with that lovely bell melody, and all of the little fills in between— it’s clear that the breaks were a labor of love.
This is an absolutely stunning track, and I firmly believe you can make it to the next round this time!! But I’ve got my fingers crossed that you will, just in case ;)
You have no clue how much I appreciate your thoughts on this! I tried incredibly hard to not overcomplicate the texture work on this, and just fill everything up with the least amount of instruments possible. Looks like that worked!
I really went looking for every bit of influence I could get from stuff I listen to/have listened to in the past. Virtual Riot was by far the biggest influence on this; the future garage stuff, the intro idea, some of the sound design. Classic dubstep inspired some of the sounds in the garage parts too. I came up with the bass and lead by failing to replicate Paper Skies' new remix miserably, but it turned out wonderfully in its own way, anyhow.
The bell melody is actually a vintage key patch from the plugin LABS (and btw, I beg you to try it out; it's basically like Kontakt, but better and largely free). I came up with a pretty progression and manually humanized it to give it that strumming feel. The drum pattern in the break is super simple; boom-bap-style kick and snare, and a glassy hat loop I cut up slightly. The rest is all about the groove. I actually enjoyed making the future garage parts the most, so I think I will do it more often from now on!
If this doesn't get me to the Group Stage at the Audio Deathmatch, it has to be rigged. Regardless, thank you so much for the kind words! Let's hope we both make it far this year ;)
I absolutely need to learn how you process your vocals, they sound so freaking pristine throughout the entire album
The energy brought here is UNMATCHED 🔥🔥🔥
THANK YOUUU!!!!!!! :)))
Musicality - 19/25
Obviously this isn’t meant to be a full-on song, and as a theme song it is incredibly catchy! I love the intensity throughout, mostly brought by the hyper fast tempo. It’s always very clear what melodies the listener is meant to focus on, which is a plus. But I would’ve loved to hear more variation! The drum pattern, the chord structure, the dynamics, the whole structure of the song in general— all of these areas could’ve given the song more personality if you had explored them a little more.
Mixing - 13/20
Not too technically ambitious of a song, and that is JUST FINE, you better hear that. The mix is clean for most sections, although it does get muddled around 0:48. My main gripe with the mix is how much the drums get drowned out! With such a fast driving beat, the drums really need to have more presence, but the rest of the mix overpowers them. I also think a bit of panning and filling-out of the stereo field could make a huge difference!
Atmosphere - 15/20
The supersaws and super confident melodies absolutely convey the atmosphere of your character. Everything in this track is constantly driving the beat forward, and it’s so intense! Some parts were a little drowned in reverb, though. (Which can absolutely sound good, just not in this kind of song.) There is definitely a consistent theme here though, and it is STRONG.
Sound Design/Instrumentation - 18/25
I don’t really have much to say as far as these categories go… it’s fairly basic sound design, and honestly a simply produced track in general— which, again, IS FINE! The supersaws are huge, and the electric guitars (I think) are fun as well. However, even in simpler soundscapes, you need to have a little more variety. When you have an entire song made from the same few sounds, the timbres begin to all mesh and muddle each other. You can achieve a much more interesting atmosphere by layering VERY DIFFERENT sounds with each other, not very similar ones. Still a fire beat nonetheless!
Overall - 10/10
I’m impressed! You’ve clearly dedicated a lot of your time and effort to the creation of art and music. The advice I’ve given here is applicable to most of your other songs as well— variety is key, in every aspect of production! And of course, panning your instruments is such a cheat code as well. It takes like 5 minutes, but filling out the stereo field creates SUCH a difference. That’s all I’ve got for you though, keep it up PizzaPasta!!
Total = 75/100
Man! You went REALLY in-depth with your review! I can tell you're a musician! Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll try to make great music in the future! :D
